依田洋一朗(1972年生まれ)は生後まもなく両親の住むニューヨークに渡り、今もマンハッタンに暮らしています。
ニューヨークの壊されゆく古い劇場やホテル、その他の歴史的スポットを主題として描き、そこに色々な映画の- サイレント映画や Film Noir の時代の映画も含めて- 登場人物のイメージを重ねて描きます。
作家は Lower Manhattan の美しい場所が、時代の趨勢の中で次々と破壊される運命にあるのを保存する唯一の方法は、絵の中に留めることだとし、映画の人物達(Lillian Gish, Charlie Chaplin, Jack Nicholson, Hermione Granger 等々)に、アメリカの、いや世界を席捲する巨大パワーに対する自分の怒りや悲しみの気持ちを代弁させようとしています。
